Candidate issue education is important, but not if it is not tied to the next level.
In fact, many of the most effective candidates and activists for student issues have been those who take a more activist approach. This approach allows them to have a clear objective, speak out about problems, and ensure that the needs of their constituency are understood by the people they will be working with. It is in this spirit that we need to think about each topic for our position paper topics. It is important to be able to say what the issue is, but it is also essential to understand how difficult work is needed to get results. This means not only learning the political processes and traditions in your own local area, but also making sure that you are fully aware of the laws that you are responsible for. It is an unfortunate fact that some governments are very unpredictable, and this makes the task of actually getting things done at a local level difficult. In addition, it is also important to understand the governing body and the makeup of the majority party within that governing body. While some people may think this is irrelevant, it is actually highly important. For example, when the local party officials are controversial, this can cause huge conflicts and it may be necessary to make some hard decisions that hurt our political aspirations. On the other hand, when the governing body has a large number of people who are on the fence, it can create inertia and slow down progress. In order to address these issues, we must have a balanced approach to the issue of position paper topics. This can only be accomplished by having a clearly defined objective and speaking out about the problem that exists and how those of us on the ground are trying to address it. Just like in any other election, the key is to create strong political parties and healthy governing bodies, so that when we get to the legislature, we do not have to worry too much about who controls that legislative body. It is only when we get to the legislature where we have to deal with the legislative people who decide our future.
